K.D. Singh is an Indian entrepreneur, visionary and statesman who believes that hard work, intellect and an unrelenting, unstoppable determination to succeed are essential ingredients for achieving great things in the World today. A Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from Jharkand and Chairman of the Alchemist Group, consisting of 11 companies with over 8000 employees across India and an asset base of Rs 10000 Cr, he has spent his life fulfilling this belief and is a living testament to the best that Indians can achieve. Kanwar Deep Singh started his dynamic career as an entrepreneur in 1981 at the ripe young age of 19, when instead of joining the army as his brother had done before him, he borrowed Rs 20,000 and headed off to Bombay to start a trading business. Within a few short years he had converted that small investment into a substantial return and the rest as they say, is history. In 1988 he returned to the Punjab and built his first factory in Chandigarh producing steel wire mesh and link fencing for the rapidly growing industrial and poultry businesses in the state. Two years later, at the age of 28 he was married to Harpreet Kaur and their happy union led to the birth soon afterwards of two sons, Karan Deep Singh and Kaman Deep Singh, both of whom are now studying business administration and management at universities in the US. By 1994 Alchemist had floated shares on the Bombay Stock Exchange, diversified into Floriculture and Real Estate acquisition and later in 2002, K.D. Singh identified an untapped opportunity in creating India’s first truly vertically integrated poultry business managing every aspect from hatcheries through to retail. This led to the launch of the successful delicatessen retail brand “Republic of Chicken” in 2008. In 2001, after enduring the pain of watching his father pass away within an inept medical system, K.D. Singh acquired a Hospital in Panchkula dedicated to providing world-class healthcare at an affordable cost. In 2004 he further diversified the conglomerate into Pharmaceuticals by producing generic heart medications and vitamins and this was followed in 2009 by the Alchemist Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) in Gurgaon with legendary heart surgeon Dr. P Venugopal. A passionate and consummate entrepreneur with the Alchemical touch, Singh has not only invested in Steel Mesh, Food Processing, Retail, Hospitals and Pharmaceuticals but also in Restaurants (The Second SIn, Spice Water Trail, Café Amor, Kebab Khan, Kink and Zazen), Hotels and Road Technologies (brought the revolutionary RBI Grade-81 into India). K.D. Singh is also a great believer in public service and industrial reform and he has served as the Chairman of the Central Advisory Board on Minimum Wages and is currently serving as Chairman of the National Meat & Poultry Processing Board with the aim of revolutionizing the Food Processing Industry in India by developing world-class standards and a national certification system for both producers and retailers. In recognition of his leadership talent and his entrepreneurial skills he has received the Rashtriya Ratan Award from the Integration and Economic Council of India, the Udyog Ratan Award from the Institute of Economic Study and the Jewel of India Award by International Solidarity in New York. In 2010, Mr. Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand, and as one of its youngest and wealthiest members, he sees it as his duty to help eradicate corruption from politics and to revolutionize the food processing industry in India. K.D. Singh is 48 and lives with his wife and two sons between Chandigarh and New Delhi.
